Gist is a tool that will integrate a user’s email inbox and social media sites to provide critical business information for people and company connections. By importing information from email accounts and social media sites, data is aggregated into one place for easy review. Contact information, correspondence, links, attachments, shared contacts, recent blogs and tweets, and Google search results are provided for each person added. This allows users to create printable dossiers, share contacts, download vCards, and request more information from any contact directly through Gist.
Engineers from Amazon, Infospace, Microsoft, Jobster, and Go2Net have came together to create the business development tool, Gist. Gist has been acquired by Research in Motion (RIM) on February 14th, 2011.
Gist imports user data from email inboxes and several social networking sites and actually automatically determines the importance of contacts. It also collects relevant news and web content to expand and enhance existing connections. The slogan “Know more about who you know” embodies the company’s idea that by using Gist, users can build stronger relationships by acquiring business-critical information.
Once registered, users may choose to create a public Gist profile with picture and employment history. By allowing Gist access to a user’s email account and social networking sites, people and companies are automatically added. Once imported, information may be easily added and edited.
The Dashboard shows news, blogs, and tweets across the user’s network. Widgets show links, attachments, messages and upcoming events for all contacts. A search box is available to find people, companies, attachments and links throughout the account. All are simple and streamlined for efficiency. Information may be filtered so that the display is customized for each user’s needs. Easy sharing from the dashboard via email, Facebook, and Twitter may be accomplished with easy-to-use tools.
The People tab displays contacts in order of importance as determined by an algorithm generated within the application. Users may manually change the rank of any name listed. Each contact is identified by company, importance, sources (connection to user), date of last email, number of emails sent/received, and a checkbox for indicating whether a user wishes to have this contact watched for news updates from Google.
The Companies tab indicates all listed companies from imported information. It also lists websites, level of importance, sources, number of contacts, and again a checkbox for watching for news updates. A particularly interesting feature is the Summary at the top of the Gist dashboard. By expanding this list, users may view specific details about the number of people with new items as well as totals of people and companies contained within their network.
Full name and email are required for signup. Account activation through an email link is necessary. Users are then directed to indicate a company name, url, and password.
Once activated, users choose among the following to determine what accounts to connect: Outlook, Gmail, Google Contacts, Email, LinkedIn, Salesforce, Facebook, Twitter, Other CSV, and vCard file. Gist can also import calendar events from Outlook or Google Calendar. Instructions are provided to link to each service.
There is no cost associated with using Gist.
Gist would be a useful tool for businesses to track important contacts from a variety of sources. Having the information collated and automatically updated can streamline the process of finding information and manually updating files as well as keeping abreast of developments within the network.
